ABOUT US: Company History

BACKGROUND
GL Associates was founded nearly three decades ago by George Lambrianakos, then an executive of a publicly-held beverage manufacturer and restaurant chain based in New York City.  George began his career designing aerospace applications for Honeywell and Grumman after receiving a MS in Operations Research and a BA in Mathematics from New York University.

In his former administrative position George was responsible for all the company’s technology across a broadly segmented consumer business with high product volumes, varying demand and complex logistics.  Under his leadership and through his initiatives the company increased performance and lowered costs in their supply chain and financial systems.

While these initiatives were quite successful, George noticed a void of business systems consultants who could leverage technology in the context of operational and financial requirements. He believed that this was an essential element for creating value in a client’s business.  George knew he could add more value to professional services with his personal attention to projects and clients, his ability to interpret client needs, and by his responsiveness to meet urgent requests.

(See the footnote below to learn more about George’s attention to detail and his commitment to customer satisfaction.)

Thus George decided to establish GL Associates and began hiring a staff of business and systems consultants who were experienced, personal, responsive and practical.  The company set up offices in New York City’s midtown, and within its first three years GL Associates led the implementations, conversions and integration of the main financial systems for some very impressive companies.  They included Seiko, HBO, National Academy of Sciences, Depository Trust Company, Merrill Lynch, McKinsey and Company, Time-Life Books, and Pfizer. The clients realized the benefits of a knowledgeable staff and their attention to detail, which translated into high quality implementations performed in less time.

After several years of acquiring a wealth of experience, GL Associates applied its best practices and developed software that enabled clients to model their charts of accounts, maintain unlimited reporting hierarchies, automate maintenance, and enforce integrity across the financial database. This system saved companies time and money, and it helped to shorten their financial closing cycles.

GL Associates later expanded its staff and began to fully support the lifecycle for the three major COBOL based COTS systems for financials and supply chain in mainframe and mid-range environments.

Years later, as companies migrated toward midrange and client server technologies, GL Associates began supporting JD Edwards, Oracle and PeopleSoft ERP applications.  These companies were later merged into Oracle, and GL Associates offered complete services for the Oracle family of ERP systems including implementation, chart of accounts design, conversion, migration, process improvement, and systems integration.

With its wealth of business systems background GL Associates established a practice for developing custom applications using n-tier and, later, web based technologies for companies who could not use off the shelf systems.  In its first few years this group designed and developed systems that companies used to run their businesses.  These included: a job costing system for a large commercial joist manufacturer; an auction and CRM system integrated with an ERP system for a three-hundred year old high-end auction company; an integrated web based system for work and asset management for a large facilities management company; a Java based Business Intelligence system that reported product-trial time-to-market service levels for a Fortune 50 pharmaceuticals company (saving the company millions); among the many other systems.

After completing many projects that benefited clients' front office operations this practice was organized into the Strategic Business Technologies group.  This group focuses on providing both strategic and tactical solutions for companies to help them grow their business, improve performance, and lower costs by improving their use of technology.

In 2002, after Sarbanes-Oxley legislation was passed, GL Associates experienced high demand for its Financial Reporting services.  The firm has more than twenty years experience redesigning and converting charts of accounts for all major ERP systems, and these services improve the financial reporting accuracy, standardization and closing cycle.  GL Associates expanded its staff and later launched a new generation of its conversion software.  The new Java-based system features a rules-based engine and a run-time monitor, and it’s optimized for converting very large databases (VLDB).  The system also features a separate facility for business users to map their own master data (i.e. chart of accounts) using any of several mapping methodologies (without requiring technical assistance).

The new Java-based conversion system has been enhanced to support legacy system conversions and application integration. Companies are now able to convert from any ERP system to a different target ERP system with ease.

GL Associates expanded its Master Data Management services to help companies achieve standardization across the enterprise.  The firm’s software enables companies to consolidate database instances and to standardize any class of data, e.g. customers and vendors across divisions, inventory master data (unit of measure), etc.  GL Associates also provides services for cleansing customer and vendor name and address data.

GL Associates continues to expand its software products and has launched a low-cost solution for automating financial consolidations.  The system will perform inter-company transactions for ownership equity and eliminations and will aggregate balances for majority owned companies.

TODAY AND BEYOND
By creating a culture like this, GL Associates is able to maintain a highly stable and experienced staff.  This means GL Associates can pass on cost effective services that produce meaningful bottom-line results to its clients.   With a hands-on style, GL Associates works closely with its clients to evaluate existing applications, establish forward looking systems strategies, select appropriate software, implement off-the-shelf solutions, and develop and integrate systems that address any unique requirement.

Since its inception, GL Associates has demonstrated high standards of integrity and professionalism in providing business systems and applications consulting services.  Clients include major corporations in manufacturing, distribution, publishing, financial services, pharmaceuticals, media and entertainment and many other industries.  GL Associates works in partnership with these clients to promote productive long-term relationships, and the results speak for themselves:  Every project a success, and every client a reference.

Footnote: George’s attention to detail and interpreting client needs was nurtured in part by his experiences as a waiter in a busy NYC restaurant, while he was a young student at NYU. Among the keys to surviving in the very hectic and demanding NYC restaurant environment is the attention a waiter gives to particular customer requests – and his ability to deliver accordingly. George prided himself on his ability to deliver exactly what the customer ordered. His principles were challenged one evening, though, when he picked up his customer’s order at the food station.  Noticing that the expensive Prime Rib the chef prepared was well-done and that the food order specifically indicated medium-rare, George refused to serve the steak, as prepared, to the customer. He asked the chef to cook a new steak, medium-rare this time.  The chef refused.  Then the maître d’ intervened and he demanded that George serve the steak to the customer; and said that if the customer complained, he would order the chef to cook another steak.  George was disappointed, and he thought that this was just plain wrong. So he stood on his principles and would not budge, and he suggested that the maître d’, himself, serve the steak to the customer. George thought, as the tension grew, that his waiting career was finished. But suddenly the maître d’ relented.  He realized that George was placing the interests of his customer first, which ultimately was good for the restaurant. The maître d’ then instructed the chef to cook a new steak, medium-rare this time.

While George was relieved at the outcome of this situation, he realized that caring about the customer’s needs and requests should be first and foremost in all his dealings – an important lesson never to be forgotten and one he’s used to guide GL Associates throughout the years.
